In 1870, Captain Samuel S. Dunnels steered his river steamer called the Vaquero through the upper Newport Bay area. Ignoring previous warnings about the dangerous bar and swell, Dunnels made history and sparked the excitement of the McFadden Brothers and James Irvine, principal landowners in the area.
According to the Newport Beach Historical Society, they mused that with Dunnels trip they had a “new port,” and the name stuck thereafter. The area was not as desirable as it is today. The state of California was selling parts of Harbor, Lido, and Balboa islands for one dollar an acre. They labeled it as swamp and overflow land.
In 1888, the McFaddens determined their shipping business would be more successful if it was moved from the inner shores to the oceanfront. They built a wharf, known as McFadden’s Wharf, and bustled with activity as the largest business in Orange County.
In 1906, the ever growing bay town officially voted to incorporate and became the city of Newport Beach.
